Is it possible to launch emacs in X11? If so how? and would there be any advantage, like using the mouse?

Yes if Xemcas is present. Using the maouse is possible in Xemacs. I don't see the point in using the mouse in such tools as emacs/vi, you loose time when you access the device.

IMO, if you have X11 installed, best to use fink to install an X11-enabled version of emacs/Xemacs.

fink install emacs21

installs emacs v21, X enabled. Personally I prefer emacs over Xemacs (both use mouse, someone else may be able to explain the diffs better, but just seems more GUI-ized to me).

Mouse works fine in either. Useful mostly for text selects/deletes IMO.

Of course you can install Emacs and XEmacs for X11 with fink.

There is however also an OS X native Emacs. You can find it here.
