I haven't seen it in forums, and don't know what it is called; so pardon my ignorance. I
think I've tried every preference, so help me.

I've been Apple since][e,LISA, up to G4 server. Finally trying OS X, and hate moving icons to organize drives AND HAVING THE ICON AND WINDOW UNDERNEATH SWERVE UP AND DOWN A COUPLE TIMES; DEPOSITING THE ICON WHERE IT WANTS TO, NOT WHERE I DO.!

PLEASE TELL ME HOW TO TURN THIS OFF!

I'll need a bit more detail to help.

Are you talking about the Dock? The Desktop? Other Finder windows?

Are you installing software, inserting disks...?

In 10.2.3 and earlier, Unsanity.com had a haxie named Dock DEtox that would do the job. I cannot get it to work on 10.2.4-6 beta.

I sent the vendor a bud report a couple of weeks ago.

I'm not knowledgable enough about the Dock and its underpinnings to do more than that.

OPEN a hard drive, open folders in the drive, attempt to move files to another folder; or reposition them in the same folder. Autogrid off-I want them where I want them to sit.

RELATED::OS X often moves an alias when I want to duplicate / move a file. Guess I'll learn. mike

Still not sure exactly what you're saying ... you just want autogrid turned off ? Go into View -> Show View Options when in the Finder. Turn 'Snap to Grid' off. Turn 'Keep arranged by' off. Done.

To move the file: just drag it.
To duplicate at file: hold the option key when you drag it
To make an alias: hold command (apple key) + option when dragging it.

Only gotcha is that if you are moving files between different drives, the default behavior is to copy.

If you are talking about using spring-loaded folders and having the window underneath move -- that IS a problem I haven't been able to work around yet. If the folder that springs open is halfway on screen and halfway off, it seems to move the whole window onto the screen when you try to drop an icons sometimes --- causing your icon to be in a relatively different position in the window than you had originally hoped.

SO NOW WE HOPE FOR THE INTENDED RESULT. YOU GUYS ARE RIGHT; I EXPECT OSX TO WORK LIKE 9; i don't care how it looks; i'll get used to that. but putting something somewhere for a valid reason and HOPING it stays sounds more like a pc than a mac.

żż-insanely average-??

Maybe this guy's problem is that his window is partially off the screen, so he's getting the feature where the window moves so that it's fully on the screen when he drags something over it?

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

really, rather than getting all worked up about things not working exactly how they did in OS 9 it's worth taking a few minutes/days/whatever to adjust to OS X.

Things to realize early:

(1) - you're almost better off without your hard drive on your desktop. It gives you the wrong idea about what areas of the computer are yours (vs. other users').

(2) - your HOME folder is akin to what your hard drive was in OS 9. That's where everything that's yours goes.

(3) - The dock is your friend. It's easy to add a folder or several to your dock, easy to remove them, use it well and annoyances about window placement/apple menus tend to disappear. Besides your regularly used applications I suggest putting your applications folder, maybe your utilities folder, your home folder, and your documents folder in your dock.

(4) - Toolbars and column view are very powerful things. You can put any folder in the toolbar and drag/drop to it, or navigate to it in a single click.

(5) - OS X despite being young as UIs go, is pretty sophisticated already (this is not to say it doesn't have plenty of room for improvement). But rather than asking questions akin to your 2 so far: "How do I make X work like 9 in this specific way?" You'd be better advised to figure out *why* you want it to work that way ("because I"m used to it" doesn't cut it - you could still be running 9 after-all). Once you know "why" then you can start asking better questions like "in 9 I did this because of reason y - what's the best way to do this sort of thing in X?"
