I'M NEW @ osx; so pardon my ignorance. I'm used to clicking on a hard drive icon, and holding the mouse button down to open files until I find the file I'm seeking.
Then, perhaps I wish to move a file/folder to another location. BUT in OS X when i close the folder, all other folders above it ALSO CLOSE, and I must again click/hold/click/hold to get back to where I want to see next.

Q) How do I set preferences to NOT CLOSE all the folders automatically?

thanks,
mike

Um...what? Are you talking about pop-up folders or something? You really lost me, bub. Try explaining more, please.

YES you certainly may; actually you already did

problem is; twenty years experience with continuity is slow to release. I'm certain that I'll learn to do as you suggest; meanwhile I want to choose which pencils I want is which drawer; then be able to choose which rules I want in each drawer- without all of the drawers slamming closed after each item.

I moved from Manchester United to the Lakers, didn't I?

Huh? Unless I'm misunderstanding your problem, OS 9 behaved the same way - when you let go of the mouse after dragging a file or folder into a few subfolders, it would close all the windows except for the folder window that you dropped the file into.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

TRY talking in English too, if you want help. reading your posts, you leave most people scratching their heads and wondering what the hell you're on about. ADDING A SENTENCE IN CAPS DOESN'T MAKE THINGS ANY CLEARER, EITHER. there's some helpful people around these parts, but we can only help you if we can understand you

No, he is not talking about spring loaded folders.

In OS 9, every time you opened a folder, a new window opened. In OS X (if the toolbar is showing) everytime you open a window, it just changes the current windows view, so you only have one window open at a time.

What he wants is to have multiple windows open, as he drills down folders. What he needs to do, is in the Finder preferences, choose "Always open folders in a new window". That shoudl solve it.

Yup... if that is what he's talking about that is the correct pref. You can also command + click at any time an duplicate this behavior "on-the-fly"

I guess that kind of makes sense, except you never hold the mouse button down to open a window (which he says he is doing) and he is saying "all the other folders close," in one-window view there would be no other windows to close, just one. That's why I assumed he was talking about pop-up folders or something.

Ah, f*ck it. WHAT PHIL SAID!

Don't worry, buddy ... we're all just making our best guess as to what he's asking. Some of the behaviors he's described in various threads almost make it sound as though someone is playing a joke on him and re-mapped his mouse buttons so that click = 'command +option + click' etc. Who knows ?
