Following directions given in a thread a bit lower down to get a display from a remote computer to show up in X11, I've had no success and got some confusing error messages.

ssh -X username@ip.address seems to connect, but then I issue a command to start up, say gimp, and it responds:
Code:
Could not find ':' in DISPLAY: [ip address removed] Gdk-ERROR **: X connection to localhost:10.0 broken (explicit kill or server shutdown).
Alternatively
Code:
setenv DISPLAY "[ip address removed]" xhost +
returns
Code:
xhost: unable to open display "[ip address removed]"
I can definitely access this machine via ssh, and it definitely has an X server running on it. Any suggestions?

I believe you have to set the display as follows:

setenv DISPLAY ipaddress:0

The ":0" is important. The number following the colon defines which display on the target machine the X window will connect to (there could be more than one). 0 is the default display, which is probably what you want.

Topcat's sugegstion will work, but that will make it an unencrypted connection. If you want an encrypted connection - your first attempt - make sure to set the DISPLAY on your own machine before connecting, like "setenv DISPLAY :0", and then "ssh -X user@host"

That seems to work. Thanks.
