eMusic = cheap music, decent quality, lesser-known artists

Music Store = more expensive but high quality, all the pop music I can handle

With these two services together do Mac users need to patronize a Best Buy or Media Play ever again?

My answer: NO!

I like eMusic, especially their jazz collection is excellent.
They are still re-ripping their content at the moment but aren't telling what format they are going to use. They used to be 128 mp3s which was losing them customers (myself included) so they are busy upgrading the quality.
As soon as they're finished I will renew my subscription. $10 a month for unlimited downloads is a bargain.

I was not aware of this but it sounds like good news to me!

I wonder what format it'll be in...

I'm interested to learn this too. I had an emusic subscription and liked it, but I was disappointed by the quality of the rips more than once. This could bring me back.

Well, it looks like Emusic is now available with higher quality VBR MP3 files. The files look like they are ripped at about 192 kbps VBR. Not a bad improvement at all. At that rate, the sound quality should be pretty good.
