I bought a second hand iMac DV/SE today, erased the harddrive and installed OS X on it.
Restart gave all the (expected) update requirements, which I approved.

Everything downloaded, but Mac OS X 10.2.5 gave this error.
I installed this as a stand alone, a no no.

I updated & upgraded all stuff (still a virgin Apple Mac OS X system!), a no no.

I repaired the permissions, and actually it was the first time I saw (the second time) not even 1 thing wrong!

But whatever I do, it simply does not want to install, and keeps on giving this error message.

I cannot find anything on Apple's website, nor here in the forums. One guy had the same, but no one responded, so I guess it must be rare or stupid?

Anyone?

Did you erase the drive before you tried installing X? If so, put the install CD in, follow the prompts, and when it gives you an "option" box, click there, erase the drive and install.

hm, that's how I erased the drive of course...how else would you do it without network or cd?

I said: "...erased the hard drive and installed OS X...".

But maybe I do not understand what you mean?

I just had the same problem on my iBook. I installed a new HD and was getting the exact same message when trying to run the 10.2.5 combo updater.

What I ended up doing was running the 10.2.3 combo, then running the stand-alone 10.2.5 (the SU version still crapped out on me).

I'm finally running 10.2.5.

Hope that helps

Spooky.. As of today, I also have this exact same problem. Also on an iMac DVSE (400mhz).
I had a login issue that I could not fix (Was running 10.2.5 fine prior to this). And it seemed easier to junk all signs of OS X, and then install again from scratch. I did not format the drive however.
Anyway, I am also getting the exact same error above. I got as far as installing 10.2 just fine. But an update to 10.2.5 is a no go. Also tried 10.2.4 and this doesnt work either. And I need the update.. iTunes 4 wont work properly with just 10.2, needs 10.2.4 at least.

Help & Clues most welcome

Do you have 3rd party RAM installed? That was one symptom on my B/W G3 that I had a chip not up to Apple's standards. I removed the chip, the computer worked great, so I sent it back and got a new one.

Same problem on a dual 1.25Ghz. I downloaded the 10.2.5 combo updater to the desktop and then installed. A clean install on my iBook 500 that same day proved no problems updating from inside SU though.

Same problem.

I had to update point by point.

10.2.1, 10.2.2, 10.2.3, etc.

Got an iMac DV 400 right here. Never had a problem even like this. Installed 10.2.5 probably 3 different times (for unrelated reasons). Got third party ram and everything too, maxed beyone 512 MB limit at 640 MB.

I love you guys..
Who needs Apple tech support when there are people on the forums such as yourselves!? hehe, Thanks to all.. I got my iMac fixed.
I did it by installing 10.2 (Went fine), then the 10.2.3 combo update. Then I tried the SUCP straight to 10.2.5, and it worked fine for me.
Thanks again!

Indeed, the help provided here is often so much better than Apple can give!

Typing this on my iMac 400 DV/SE which I was able to update to 10.2.5 by first using the 10.2.3 update.

Thanks!

There is an article on the front page of Macfixit about this very issue. Apparently, Quicktime 6.1.1 is the cause. Updating to QT 6.2 prior does not help, and the given solution (using the combo updater) is currently the only/best one.

Yeah, I can agree with this. Last week I installed OS X 10.2 onto my TiBook with the Erase&Install option. It started up, I put in my network settings and ran Software Update.

It came up with a whole host of software to be updated. I selected all and hit "Install". All went fine apart from the 10.2.5 updater which gave the above message. Nothing I could do would work, so I reinstalled (again with the erase option), did the network setup gubbins and ran SU to get the 10.2.5 update BEFORE anything else, then everything was fine from then onwards.

Mucho odness!

Just had this same problem, trying to get 10.2.5 on a Pismo. Used Pacifist to install the 10.2.5 combo update, seems to work.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

Yep, me too. I got around it by installing the combo update from a separate 10.2.4 partition I have for backup.

There was a similar problem with installing 10.1.5 combo update. If you guys remember Apple issued a security fix for Software Update so if you installed that update before you install OS update it would give you an error when you tried to install it. The problem was the order in which the updates were installed from SW.
