Just got a new iBook and got X11 installed on it. Only problem is that it's using TWM instead of Quartz as the window manager and I can't remember what file to hack to change this. I've done it on my desktop machine but just don't remember what I did. Can anyone help?

You'll need to edit the .xinitrc file in your home directory. Near the bottom, you'll see a line that reads:

twm &

This needs to be commented/deleted, and the following needs to be added:

/usr/X11R6/bin/quartz-wm &

Good luck!

What if the .xinitrc file isn't there? Can I just create it? Actually I know I could but making sure that the config file I want read is the one that gets read then becomes the hassle.

Yees, you create the .xinitrc file. I use the Terminal and a text editor that ships with OS X- pico.

From the prompt, make sure you are inn your home directory (~/). type "pico .xinitrc". Window will open, add the commands you need then ctrl-o, enter, and ctrl-x.

There are a number of properties you can add in .xinitrc for your paths and for X11.

There is a X11 mailing list that is very helpful.
