I'm running 10.2.3 and was just wondering what defines the maximum startup screen resolution (the grey one with the apple logo).

Until recently, I was on a 19" Sony Monitor. At 800x600, the startup screen was 800x600. Same for 1024. But when I ran at 1280x1024, the startup screen dropped to what seemed like 640x480 or some other low res.

I've now changed monitors to a Acer LCD screen 17" and the startup resolution seems to be 1280 x 1024.

I'm the kind of person who wonders about these things, so I just wondered what affected this startup screen resolution.

Thanks

i would like to know that too. as far as i understood the startup screen resolution is stored into the nvram. i tried several times to change the settings, but in my case it is like my old 1705 multiscan display can only "negotiate" a 640x480 resolution during that early boot stage.
i would really like to know how to force the startup resolution (

I believe the file you're looking for is:

/Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver.plist

I haven't tried it myself, but you should be able to edit it to a known safe resolution and synch rate.
