I just painstakingly built and configured Gnome2 via Fink and it's running pretty nicely (aside from the X11 problem where windows end up under the menubar and serious lag when metacity is tracking my mouse)...

And I wanted to try some of the other Ximian apps, specifically Evolution and Gnumeric.

When I go to install them, it looks like they depend on Gnome 1.4 libraries... if I let fink build these libraries (and presumably install the conf files that come with them), will anything get overwritten that will cause my Gnome2 system to stop functioning? I'm especially worried about .conf files and such because presumably they have the same name. I've just said NO at that step pending your advice.

I'm sure Gnome1.4 and Gnome2 can coexist, I just have this sinking feeling that I should've installed Gnome1.4 first.

Definitely. GNOME 2 replaces GNOME 1.4 in the real world (seemingly, fink will let you install some of the base 1.4 libs, but there are some oddities with the way fink handles and configures GNOME 2).

I am 95% of the way to having GNOME 2.3.0 ported to fink - give me a few more days and I might post the files somwhere...

well it should not. on my linux system i have succesfully run gnome 1.4 and 2.x.x libraries. as for evolution..the development version should compile with very few changes to the gnome 2.x.x stuff. anything other than the development version will require you to use the ancient and depreciated gnome 1.4 libraries.
