I'm at work and don't have my Install CD with me. The Disk utility did no good. Safari still "hangs" when ever I ask it to load a page.

Did you try to delete all preferences/caches files in ~/Library?

edit: I mean only Safari related files of course

tried that too, still it just gets very very slow

Did you try it as another user or as root? If it works for another user, then something relevant to the user only is affecting Safari.
