I assume it stands for software.

Anyway, it's used by Fink. Then Virex started adding stuff to /sw, and it kinda buggered up Fink if I remember correctly.

You can make that "sw" folder invisible if it's bothering you....

If you have Virex installed, you can update to the latest version and it fixes the "sw" bug with Fink by re-locating the folder.

Just for the record, how does one go about doing this? I've wondered, but never bothered to figure it out. I have several folders I really don't need to see in the Finder.

If you have the Developer Tools installed, it's:

% sudo /Developer/Tools/SetFile -a V /sw

*Note: The "V" is case sensitive, upper case makes it invisible, where as "v" makes it visible.

Most of us don't have the Dev tools installed. I am sure there is another terminal command... I think I used one before, but forgot it

If you search VT or MacUpdate, you'll probably find 10-15 3rd party apps that can do this for you as well...

The sw folder contains Fink and all things that have anything to do with Fink. If you erase it you are essentially uninstalling Fink.

LOL I just looked it up on both VT.com and MU.com and there was one free one, but it REALY sucked and couldn't figure it out. All the rest were shareware crap!

Can't believe someone doesn't have a little Applescript that could even do it!

Fink installs unix software.

If you don't use fink and updated to Virex 7.2.1 you should delete the sw folder. It was erroneously created by Virex 7.2.

As people said... It's one of two things:

1) You installed fink
2) You installed Virex 7 (or some version). Virex 7 used some fink components, and they wrote an AWFUL installer which, well, let's just say it was a colossal faux pas.

If you're using Virex but not Fink, then delete /sw and delete Virex and get a newer version. If you're using Fink, you better leave /sw
