I have a USB HP 320 still camera (works fine with iPhoto) that also captures movies.

iPhoto sees the camera and will grab the pix, but won't grab the movies.

What can I use? I had assumed that a Mac with OSX would just be plug 'n play and recognize it (which is what XP does!), but I can't figure out a way to grab it.

Any suggestions?

When you plug your camera in, it will mount on the desktop (assuming you have the Finder Preferences set to this).

You can then access the files like with any other folder.

Image Capture does this very nicely.

I think it's easier to just grab them off of the mounted drive. Image capture seems kind of unweildy for me.

Image capture did the trick, dragging the files myself would be preferrable, but it didn't work.

The camera didn't show up on the desktop (I have the finder set to show hard disks, removable media, and servers). Any ideas on how I can get it to show up on the desktop?

Thanks for the info.

I'm not sure, but is your camera using the mass-storage protocol?

It might use something else instead?
(don't know about tjis actually, but I once bought a very, very cheap digital camera and it didn't supported this mass storage thing, so it didn't work with OS 9 [in those days])

Some cameras just don't mount the drives to the desktop. Canon is known for this. It seems like you're not getting something you should be, but with the ease of Image Capture, It's not so big. Look at the bright side: If you have one that does mount, you have to eject it before unplugging the camera. One more step, which I regularly forget.

I have that same camera and if you plug the camera in iPhoto opens and you can grab images. If, however, you buy a CF adapter (I use a $10 PC-Card adapter) you can mount the CF card directly to the desktop and do whatever with it.

As mentioned, variation in the USB protocols used by the camera will cause it to either mount as a disk on the desktop or not. Most recent cameras will mount, older ones often won't.

e.g., Olympus C-3030 will NOT mount in desktop and transfers are sort of slow into iPhoto; Olympus C-3040 will mount on desktop and transfers are a lot faster.
