I can't remember, but does one get ._ files with NTFS? I know that NTFS can store forks, but I'm not sure how OS X deals with it over a network.

I don't think you do get these files with NTFS, but in the past I used to have ._ files galore when transferring over iTunes encoded MP3 files. However, I probably was using FAT32 on the storage drive at the time. With my NTFS storage drive all the ._ files are gone.

I think my Alzheimer's is acting up again...

IIRC, it only works if you're connected to an NT4 server or a Win2K Server using Windows' Services for Macintosh (MS' implementation of AppleShare IP). Connecting to an NTFS share via SMB will create the dotfiles.

I am using Windows XP Pro at home, via SMB over wireless.

I transferred some iTunes-encoded MP3z over to my PC (NTFS drive) and low-and-behold, no ._ files. I am using X.2.6.

Come to think of it, I have MacDrive installed on the PC now too. Perhaps MacDrive hides the ._ files from view under Windows?

i believe that windows of all versions default to "hide invisible files" which does include those ._ files. Noticed this on our machines at work.

As the other guy said, unless you are using the services for mac, then all that stuff is probably on there.

annoying...

Apple will hopefully fix this in Panther. This is really annoying...

Even if NTFS supports multiple forks, the protocol used to transfer them might not (SMB probably doesn't). Also, many of those files are related to metadata and Mac OS window prefs rather than resource forks.

Yep, you guys were correct. I had reconfig'd XP a few months back and I guess I had turned on this setting again. Turned it back off, and Voila! all the ._ files reappeared on my NTFS volume.

So I had to go back and manually delete those several hundred files. There doesn't really seem to be any crucial information contained in those files as far as MP3 functionality under Mac OS is concerned.

Now what I can't figure out is why some directories have .DS_Store and some don't. Maybe with those directories I had played around in the directory window or something.

By the way, I found this little freeware app: DS_Store Cleaner 1.0.0
