I read this tip someplace recently and can't find where. I thought I had it memorized, but it's not working.

The guy said something like, you know how hard it is to locate something on the desktop if you have a bunch of stuff on it? Well you could drag the desktop folder and put it in your Dock. Then you could right-click on the icon in the dock and you'll get a pop-up menu listing everything on your desktop.

I tried, all I get is "reveal in Finder". And I have about 50+ files on my OS X desktop.

any help?

I'm using 10.2.4 if that makes a diff.

After your message I just went back to try again...

I had been dragging the desktop file from above /users. When I dragged *my* (user) desktop to the dock, it worked.

thx

Another easy way is to drag your home folder to the dock. You can then access the desktop, document folder, etc...

Did you drag it to the right side of the Dock?

I got this tip over at osxhints.com

In Safari create a new folder and then creat new bookmarks in safari edit the address field with one of lines below when you're finished place the folder in your bookmarks bar. now you'll be able to access folders on your harddrive with Safari.

file:///Users/Home Folder Name/Desktop
file:///Users/Home Folder Name/Documents
file:///Users/Home Folder Name/Applications
file:///Users/Home Folder Name/Pictures
file:///Users/Home Folder Name/Movies

According to this thread it is quite silly to have a bunch of items on your desktop.
To have a folder in your dock, you have to drag it to the right side of your dock (assuming you have the dock at the bottom...) next to the trash.
Most handy is it to have your Home folder there, so you have everything at your hands.
I have the Applications folder in the dock as well.

Yea if you like drilling through folders all day long. I'd say place a folders with items that you access the most. I don't need every item in my Home directory and with constant use you'd get tired of it real quick. I use a combonation which is Tigerlaunch, Safari, dock.
