Ok, I took the plunge to the other side - left os 9.2.2 behind and installed X.2.5 on my 2. gen. Powerbook 300 MHz

All new applications. Including Dreamweaver and Fetch, which I use CONSTANTLY. But now I get this insessant "waiting for server" while trying to up or download from the server, and it would be an understatement to say IT DRIVES ME NUTS!

Any good ideas? Solutions? Answers?

I am swallowing the fact that I can no longer use my laserwriter beacuse OS X doesn't support the serial port.

I am swallowing the fact that I have no real SCSI anymore. And cannot use my old CD burner.

I am swallowing a host of other things, because I have taken the plunge after months of procrastination.

But I will also swallow reformatting to return to OS 9.2.2, if I don't find a solution. How can I run a site this way? (I can't)

Personally I can't see how you can stand to use OSX on a 300MHz G3 at all, let alone with said applications (which are slow as all hell under OSX on their own).

You've sorta left out some details there... which server does it choke on? A print server? A laserwriter itself? A file server? Can we have some more details, like network configuration and whatnot?

I'd go back to OS9 if I were you. It'll run faster, smoother, and as you said, you'll have access to everything you should...

...and running your system won't be constant torture.

The "wait for server" turned out to by my (national!) ISP who had lost total control over their ftp-server (repair date unknown, would you believe it!) - mail still works, though.

OS X is not as slow as I could have feared on my "old" machine, but I am very sad though that Apple is cutting hardware support on well functioning powerbooks; I would say the distance from wallstreet 2nd gen. to ibook is not as dar as from 1400 to G3.

Dreamweaver IS slow, I grant you, but It was my hope they would snap to it. Maybe they still will?

I need the wallstreet for its bluetooth functionality, as I need it for travelling to obscure places where flashing a wireless connection is not the best display of riches... (t68i in my inside pocket). And for this I believe I need OS X, yes?

Thank you for your time.

Unless I'm missing something, Bluetooth on a Wallstreet is going to be a pain.

(I'm writing on a Wallstreet/300, just like yours, which btw has run OS X swimmingly for the last two years)

I don't know of a Bluetooth PC Card that works in OS X -- if you do, tell me!

Otherwise, you'll need a USB PC Card, and a USB Bluetooth adaptor.

A USB card with the ports built in to the card (like this) won't have a power supply, which means you'd have to plug a separate wire until the wall (and hope it can work with the electricity in wherever you are).

Otherwise, you have a USB PC Card with a dongle, which means even more crazy stuff hanging off your Wallstreet.

At this point you're quite unsubtle, and your T68i in your pocket pales in comparison to all the gear sitting in your lap.

hehe - well, but I figure: Where I am going a laptop is a laptop is "just" a computer, but a computer with wireless connection to the world is something else.

I'll be using a bluetooth dongle on a pcmcia-card - and agree, I COULD do without more stuff sticking out, but I'm travelling by car, so... My 300 is expendable...
