Hi
Sometime this evening I lost the ability to drag and move the icons on my desktop.

The only potentially related events were that I made a few tries at downloading the 131 MB unreal tournament demo. Each time I could obtain a disk image but doubleclicking it failed to produce a usable folder or program.

Around the time that I was making these efforts with UT2003, I lost the ability to move icons either on the desktop or in any other window.

What is going on?

I suppose this is a pretty common, yet rare Finder bug. I experienced it once as well, and I too was downloading a folder to the desktop. (I'm running 10.2.3). I've believe others have been bitten by this bug, and there may even be a utility out there to restore function. However, I found that by simply logging out (or perhaps I restarted), the bug vanished and hasn't cropped up since.

Yes, it's actually quite enjoyable, yet irritating...;-)

Just relaunch the Finder (Apple Menu > Force Quit...).

I started to see this behaviour when I updated to 10.2.5. Annoying, but as pointed out, quite easy to solve. Even easier if you install Cocktail and use the "Show Quit in Finder menu"-option to add a Quit-option to the Finder menu (doh). Then you can restart the Finder in a flash

I had this happen wed. night trying to d/l Ut2k3 as well. Unfortunately Relaunching Finder didn't resolve it, neither did Logging out. Only a restart was able to resolve the issue. But now I'm having oddities occur. Afterwards, Mouseworks Prefpane wouldn't launch, missing some file. So I reinstalled it and my Studio Wireless mouse worked fine. System was asleep last nigh and now this morning it was off with only monitor on to its own screensaver. Now, booting, I can get into mouseworks and it recognizes a connected mouse but the mouse isn't moving. Maybe time for a repair of HD and maybe some defrag.

Restarting the computer seemed to resolve the problem for me. I don't have the Mouswoks prefpane that the previous post descibes, but if there is an attached preference file, I would delete it.
