http://lcdproc.omnipotent.net/

Me an someone from #macnn else went looking for OS X drivers for LCD displays, and we found this one that seems to be compatable.

We can't seem to get it to compile though.

Also: for the display we were looking at was this one:

I think it would be sweet if the software could compile, and communicate with the USB LCD.

Well, if you're up for some reading, take a look at Apples technote Porting Command Line UNIX Tools to Mac OS X. Maybe there's just a configuration-file or header that needs to be adjusted a bit.

I've been looking at those LCD-displays myself though and agree that it would be quite cool to set one up

looking here...

...it seems a little more complicated than that.

you can probably build the daemon okay, but most of the modules rely on /proc which darwin doesn't have but then you can always roll your own, i guess.

(note, supporting usb panels whould seem to be much more complicated)

Yes, for sure a bit more work than going through the usual porting stuff. Thanks for the link!

An LCD for OS X wouldn't actaully be that hard to do from scratch. I currently have all the parts required (for use in another project) and have already considered making some sort of device with an LCD for use with OS X. Overall the parts required are: USB module from DLP Design, OS X drivers for the USB module from FTDI (currently down) a microcontroller (a PIC18F452 in my case), an LCD of your choosing and finally some OS X software to make the LCD display what you want... Also some electronics and microcontroller skills might be useful as well. Next question is what would you use said LCD for?

Hey,
I'm the "other guy" who was thinking about LCDs. Just for displaying things like Uptime, Drive Usage, Drive Fullness, things like that. Possibly a Graphical Equalizer Display while using iTunes maybe. Who knows. Anything. You'd relaly want to build one yourself? If you're going to be building it yourself, and writing the software yourself (which I think is the hard part) then why not just buy one that's already made, and write software for it?

or better still, why not just port/submit changes to lcdproc?

this seems much more sensible given the project is well founded and already has a reasonable plugin-style modules system for output...

Haha, yeah.
That's what our original post was. If anybody could port it to OS X.

Believe it or not some people enjoy making stuff themselves.
