Help, I screwed up OSX.2.6, cant modify apps. folder

All was well until I tried to install a couple of pieces of software this evening. I installed Plucker (offline html for Palm) and then decided to give Watson another try. As I attempted to install Watson by dragging the icon to the Application folder, I received this message:

Watson cannot be installed because the application folder cannot be modified!

I have tried installing and uninstalling and cannot get anything to work. I tried logging in as root and was still unable to work. Anyone have any thoughts on this?
