Is there any way to run XMMS in X11 without having a Xterm window open? To launch it you have to have one open, and if you close it, it kills XMMS. I would like to be able to run it without another window. Also, is there any way to play AAC audio in XMMS?

If you launch XMMS with

Code:
xmms &
you can safely close the xterm. The & at the end specifies that the command you execute should run as a background process. And why not put XMMS in the Applications menu?

When it comes to AAC-support - have a look at http://aacplugin.sourceforge.net.

Thanks, I never knew about the & command.

Can someone give some instructions for installing the aac plugin? I am somewhat of a UNIX newbie. Thanks!

Alright, I looked into this and tried compiling various aac-plugins for XMMS, but.. eh, it's not as easy as it could be, to say the least. I believe I'll wait for the Fink people or anyone else to port an acc-plugin for XMMS.

Well, alright, for sure it's not impossible. I just don't feel like tweaking header-files, Makefiles and configuration-files for hours. I'm not that desperate to get AAC working with XMMS. If you want to give it a try though, check out AudioCoding.com. They host a AAC-decoder that comes with various plugins of which one is for XMMS. I had plenty trouble compiling all the necessary libraries though. Post back if you have more patience than me!
