I am not sure if it is user-error... but I'm stuck.

I read that to make a bootable CD, you can used an app called BootCD to make a mountable image. I did just that. I told it to include Drive-10 and Nortons (latest version).

It burned a CD... I booted holding down 'option'... it showed-up as a bootable volume... I selected it... it took

F O R E V E R . . .

to get to the blue-screen... then just as long to FINALLY get to a login screen... BUT...

It only shows a user called "Other..." and I have NO IDEA what to use as a username and password...!

I tried all different variations of Admin, administrator, root, Apple, guest, etc... nothing got me in.

What is the "Universal" default "Root" login credentials...?

REASON: According to Norton's SpeedDisk... my OSX drive is SEVERELY fragmented, and the graphic depiction of the data is QUITE a mess... SO, I wanted to boot-off the CD and optimize the drive. Am I doing something wrong...? is there ANOTHER way to make a Boot-CD...? I guess I "could" install OSX on another drive... but I don't want to waste the space... but maybe that IS the way go... Hmmm... I guess typing-this-out is somewhat helpful...

Any additional comments...?

RTFM

Login / Password for BootCD is: root / bootcd

- My opinions may have changed, but not the fact that I am right.

Y'know... you'd think I was some ludite at times like these. I will re-try this, as I push the Jack-Ass ears back into my head.

Thank you, very much.

Be careful with anything labeled Norton. From what I've heard, you want to stay away from their Mac OS X products...I've just too many horror stories of people who ran (Disk Doctor I think) and had it hose their drive. Proceed with caution!

I have heard (read) similar things... but ultimately, I used Drive-10 to defrag the drive. I mean, it was SEVERELY fragmented... a total mess.

Once I optimized, I ran Apple's disk utility to check the drive and ran a permission-fix... then re-booted.

I must say that it did boot a "tad" faster than usual.

It did absolutely NOTHING for my USB issues (see other post in this forum) but I didn't really expect it to help THAT issue. I do feel better knowing that I don't have over 7,500 fragmented files on my startup disk though.

...later...

Does the bootcd need to be created on the machine that it will be run on? I have an imacdv SE that is acting quite sketchy, and I made a boot CD on my 933 with 10.2.6, but the imac has 10.2.3 on it. Once I boot with the CD, I will eventually get to the login screen, but once I enter the password, I just get a beachball that does not go away. thoughts?

I don't think Norton Will run on a Boot CD disk, I tried a few times and it just kame up with eros saying that essential files where missing and that it neaded to be re-installed. I even tried moving evry file I could find connected with Norton on to the disk image, (it must patch the os, or something) but in the end I just gave up, and bought DiskWarrior.
