My PowerMac G4 has been performing like a champ...until today. I upgraded to 10.2.6 yesterday. (NOTE: After installing the Update, I performed FSCK in Single User Mode and then performed a repair of disk permissions.)

The first symptoms were odd Finder behavior. Several different apps were freezing and I had to Force Quit. However, Force Quit from the Dock and from the Apple Menu did not work; only COMMAND OPTION ESCAPE worked?and COMMAND OPTION ESCAPE only worked on the second or third try.

The freezing then spread to the Finder itself.

The Finder ending up very hosed itself. The Log Out, Restart and Shut Down commands failed to respond. Restarting the Finder did not re-enable these commands. My only option was to do a forced restart via the restart button on the tower case.

When the G4 restarted, it restarted in Mac OS 9. Hmmm... So I reset the Start Up disk preferences and rebooted the Mac.

When the G4 restarted this time, I pressed the COMMAND and S Key so that I could enter Single User Mode and perform a repair of the file structures. The boot time was really slow. Things seemed to get hung up after loading the intial header info and before the list of USB and FireWire devices appeared.

When this list of devices finally appeared, a series of error messages appeared. This error message repeated itself over and over and over again and would not stop:

USBF: 52 AppleUSBOHIC[0x3892800]:: MakeDevice error setting address. err-0xe00002ed device = 0x37b3f00 - releasing device

(NOTE: The number after USBF changed, increasing. Also, the number after "device =" also changed.)

Another forced restart, another COMMAND S, and the same thing happened again. Another forced restart, another COMMAND S, and the same thing happened again. I tried unplugging my USB hub snd restarting. Same list of error messages. I even tried unplugging the keyboard. Same list of error messages.

When I restarted the G4 the next time, I just let it boot up normally. I cannot say if the process took longer or not, but eventually the Log-in window appeared. I was able to log-in.

The G4 "appears" to be functioning properly. In fact, I reconnected my USB hub and keyboard.

Everything seemed fine until I tried printing from Adobe Acrobat. I was also using FirstClass Client to access my school's e-mail server and had Safari open. When I tried printing from Acrobat, the printing process seemed to take forever to spool. Print Center seemd to take a long time to launch/appear. Once it did appear, the printer (Epson 890) printed slowly. Worse, the entire system slowed to a crawl. I could out-type FirstClass if I tried to send an e-mail and out-type Safari when enterining URLs; windows were slow to respond; Safari took additional time to load and render web pages. When printing had finished, system performance seemed to return to normal.

Any ideas what the heck is going on?

I think Apple has really been struggling with keeping all their supported machines happy with these last few OS updates. I'm sorry to hear yours is not good.

I'll suggest the default combo updater advice. Download the 10.2.6 combination update, install it, and then see what happens.

I've tried the 10.2.6 Combo Update and it solves none of my USB problems.

Apple needs to get its act together.
