I have searched and searched for a decent webdav service on the net similar to .mac DAV functionality, without any luck...

.Mac is far too expensive for me, since I'll only use the dav functionality (all the other things are not usefull for me, I allready use an excellent IMAP service for example...)

So isn't there another one out there that just offers that without other things included that you wont use anyway and that offers it for a reasonable price?

BTW: i'm talking about DAV, not just file-upload systems. The big advantage of DAV is that it's transparent for- and integrates with the filesystem and you can use it from within applications as well.
I'm Appleless and unhappy: tiBook is dead and iPod stolen

I was actually looking for the same answer several months ago and turned up empty handed. BUT ... what I DID find out is that DAV is supported under Apache 2.x. So, I would guess that once more web hosts migrate to 2.x (all the ones I've seen still use 1.3) you will start to see more web DAV services from these places. I've got my eye on a highly rated service that offers lots of space and bandwidth. I'm just waiting for them to migrate to apache 2.x and ask them to enable DAV in the apache.conf file.

I'll definitely post again if I find something that works ... web folders via DAV totally rock. I use my .mac webfolder for virtually EVERYTHING that's not small enough to be sent in an email for YEARS now ...I'd love to see a 3rd party solution that offers real bang-for-the-buck.

One tip: .mac services ARE prorated based on your anniversary date. Meaning, if your .mac service expires on Sep 30th of this year (like a LOT of us who were using .mac when it began costing money), you can bump up your iDisk space until then and it will only be about 1/3 of the price listed on .mac (eg. the $60 /year to go from 100 to 200mb would only cost you $20 if you purchase it when there is only 4 mos left until your anniversay. Its not a perfect solution .. but you could do it as a stopgap to increase your space NOW for ~20 bucks and then hope a better solution will be available by sep 30.

WebDAV can also be used with Apache 1.3.x via mod_dav.

The only problem I have with webDAV is that it really mucks up pages with server side includes on them. Has anybody else found this problem, or a fix for it?

You don't need Apache 2 to enable WebDAV. Older versions will do just fine. You can even turn it on on the Apache server on You Mac OS X machine.

You can get DAV to work under OS X Client, and it's integrated automatically with OS X Server.

Check out http://www.macosxhints.com

HOWEVER, if you're going to run it on your own machine, why not just use Appletalk over the net instead?

EDIT: If you're going to try and access WebDAV on your Mac from a Windows machine, don't bother. It won't work. You have to use WebDrive at www.webdrive.com for that.

starman: what happens when you do the Web folder thing in Windows?

Why WebDAV is better than Appletalk over the net: it is faster, although possibly quirkier and certainly harder to setup (esp. w/o the OS X Server tools).

Does anybody use WebDAV to develop webpages and use Server Side Includes?

Check the Apple Discussion forums for more detail, but the biggest difference is what gets sent to the server.

Mac -> Mac:
username/password

XP -> Mac
www.domainname.com??username/password

Or something like that.

I installed WebDrive and it worked perfectly.
