I would like to know just how common sleep problems are under MacOS X, and with which Mac models. Which best describes your situation?:

Problem invoking sleep. Screen goes dark, HD and/or fan may or may not spin down, power light does not blink/pulsate, computer unresponsive and must be rebooted. Sometimes display is still visible (sans backlight) but is frozen.

Problem waking from sleep. System goes to sleep normally, but when woken from sleep, symptoms above are observed. Computer must be rebooted.

Other problem with sleep, but not requiring a reboot.

No problems with sleep. I usually put my Mac to sleep rather than shut it down.

No problems with sleep, but I don't sleep my Mac all that often.

I never use sleep.
If you indicated 1 or 2 above, which model Mac do you have?

I have a GHz TiBook, and since 10.2.4/5, I noticed that my book doesn't go to sleep immediately like it used to. It takes about 10-15 sec for the pulsating light to begin. Around the same time, I started getting "freezes" like #1 above. The backlight would go off and I would give it the 3-fingered salute. (One thing to mention is that these freezes were always initiated with the power button bringing up the Cancel-Sleep-Restart-Shutdown dialog. I normally just close the 'book).
However, tonight I decided to give it a little longer, so I just shut it and waited. Sure enough, after about (what seemed like?) a minute, it finally pulsed. When I opened the book, it didn't wake until I pressed a key, but it certainly was better than a forced restart. YMMV.

My sleep problem stems from the Powerlogix 1GHZ upgrade. The notorius Powerlogix Sleep bug.
M Cube has no problems when the Apple CPU is installed. With the Powerlogix Chip installed, the Computers lock up immediately whne the Cube is woken up. No screen, no nothing. Forced restart (powerswitch) is required. If you are considering an upgrade of 1GHZ or 1.2 GHZ, go with Sonnet, They don't have this issue.

My dual 867 PowerMac used to have sleep/shut down issues, until I posted for help.
Someone suggested I fix me permissions. I tried it, and about 10 mins later, no more sleep/shut down problems. This was about 2 weeks ago and I have yet to encounter the same problems.

When I bring my iBook 800 out of sleep the sound is sometimes off-balanced, usually off to the left channel. This will happen for a day or two then will not do it for a while. Get's annoying.

I had problem #1, as well as a variation in which instead of turning off the screen, everything would just freeze where it was and required a reboot. All my problems were going-to-sleep related as opposed to waking up. It didn't happen on every attempt, maybe 40-50% of the time. This started with 10.2.5, I believe.
Trying to fix that and a bunch of other crashes I'd been having, I unplugged all USB devices except the standard mouse / keyboard, only plugging other things in when I'm about to use them, and I've had fewer problems with crashes all around, and the sleep problem has never reappeared. I don't consider this an acceptable solution, but for now I'm just happy to be able to go several days without having to restart.
I have a MDD, dual 1.25, 2 gig RAM, currently running 10.2.6.

Hello, here is my situation:
I bought a Western Digital 120 GB SE drive for my iMac DV. It will sleep fine running 9.2.2, but when I try and put it to sleep under 10.2.5, the rest of the machine sleeps while the new hard drives sounds like it's spinning up and spinning down, again and again.
Since it works in 9 and not X, I'm thinking it's not really a hardware issue and a problem with OS X instead. Western Digital responded saying it was an issue with OS X and that the drive is fine.
My iMac:
iMac DV 400 MHz
1 GB RAM
120 GB WD 7200 rpm SE
9.2.2.
10.2.6

Have had problems with a Wallstreet and IceBook going to sleep in 10.2. Problems with coming out of sleep in 10.0-10.1.

Yep, my ibook 700 (12 ") has experienced the same sort of trouble. Really frustrating and worrisome -- this isn't good for disk integrity.
Things haven't happened for a while (since I upgraded to 10.2.6?). Might be a 10.2.5 specific problem.
And I can say that it's unrelated to peripherals, seeing as I almost never use any.

Well i think i figured out what was causing my crash-on-sleep problems, so i thought i'd pass the info along here.
I'd read previously that others thought their sleep/crash issues might be related to USB, and that un-plugging USB devices before entering sleep helped mitigate their problems. I had tried that previously to no avail, however since my WallStreet does not have USB built-in, i decided to try ejecting the USB CardBus (aka PCMCIA) card prior to invoking sleep. Since following this protocol, i have had no sleep/crash problems. Prior to installing the recent security update, which required a restart, i had an uptime of about 33 days. Privously, the best uptime i could hope for was about a week.
I must admit, however, that toward the end of that 33 days, some funky stuff was beginning to happen (e.g. Safari's icon was always dimmed in the Dock, even if the application was active, and it would play this little game of bringing one of its windows forward, then another app, then back to Safari, etc. for a few cycles; other anomalous, quirky things were happening too, but no OS crashes!) Perhaps logging out and back in might have cleared up the quirks.
Now i'm trying to figure out how to eject CardBus cards via either AppleScript or a UNIX script so i can write a script which will automatically eject any cards prior to entering sleep mode (via SleepWatcher). If anyone knows how to eject cards via a script, please share!

When 10.2 first came out, I had problems with waking up after putting my iBook to sleep. Often when leaving work I would pull the network cable, pull the power, and then put the 'Book to sleep. When I'd get home, it would not always wake up.
Well, the combination of OSX 10.2.x updates and unplugging AFTER sleeping has cured my problems. I haven't had an issue in quite a few months of everyday use.
