If you refer to this thread, I experienced some USB wonkiness after upgrading to Mac OS X 10.2.6.

USB Problems After Updating to 10.2.6

I have narrowed down the problem.

I have an ATi Radaeon 9000 card with ADC connector. My display is an Apple 17in CRT Studio Disaply with ADC connector.

While I was having USB issues and disconnecting cables, I had forgotten about my Griffin iMic. This USB audio device was connected to one of the USB ports on my Studio Display.

Last night I went to use the iMic. (I was going to connect headphones to the device.) Oddly enough, when I opened the Sound Preference Pane, the iMic USB audio device was not listed. Hmmm... I disconnected and reconnected the device, but it still would not appear in the Sound Preferece Pane.

It was at this point I remembered I had forgotten about the iMac when my USB problem appeared. So I disconnected the iMic and rebooted the PowerMac G4. I entered Single User Mode. The USB error message did not appear. I reconnected the iMac to the Studio Display's USB port and restarted the Mac from the log-in screen. I entered Single User Mode and there was the USB error message.

To verify that I had found the cause of my woes, I connected the iMac to my PowerBook G4 running Mac OS X 10.2.6. I restarted te TiBook and entered Single User Mode. No USB error message with the iMic attached.

So now the question is, what is the source of the USB error code? Is it a bad USB hub in my Studio Display? Is it a bad USB controller in the ATi Radeon 9000? Or is it just a combo of the three that don't work in 10.2.6?

A concise summary of the status of USB in 10.2.6 is that it is seriously screwed.

Problems for me include random USB devices not being detected after wake from sleep, and random devices stealing virtually all of the USB bandwidth at the expense of anything else. Neither of these problems existed on 10.2.5 or earlier.

I also have an iMic but am not convinced that it is the sole cause of the problems (the iMic is connected to my Apple Pro Keyboard which is in turn connected to my Belkin 7-port hub).

When I use the term "cause of the problems", I am of course being slightly disingenuous. The sole cause of the problem is clearly Mac OS X v10.2.6 and, specifically, the "upgraded" IOUSBFamily kernel extension (/System/Library/Extensions/IOUSBFamily.kext).

Apple has been progressively screwing up USB support in Jaguar as its version number has creeped up. Either this is an elaborate ploy to get us to upgrade to Panther, or a shocking indictment of the state of Apple's software engineering capability.

All I have is a stupid little two-button wheel mouse with my TiBook. After a while (a few days) it begins to skip and jump, and then freeze with a dead USB message in console.

Bleah.

Yes, my Microsoft Wireless Optical Mouse Blue is skipping and jumping as well.

Apple really needs to do something about this fast.

I have to empathize with you. Ever since 10.2.6 I have had EXTREMELY irritating USB behavior. I have mentioned it in other threads... but I'll have entire chains go down... Hubs that keep resetting every 15-30 seconds thus making my mouse skip and sputter... When dragging $ dropping or working in apps where you need to click & drag, the drag gets lost randomly as if I released the mouse...

It's almost to the point where I cannot get work done. I cannot drag a marquis in Photoshop unless I do it REALLY quick, otherwise, it will deselect before I've encompassed everything I need to... and a host of OTHER examples.

I know it doesn't HELP things, but I'm really glad to know that it's NOT just me or my system and that it really is an "OS" issue.

This really needs to be addressed. I have sent in two (2) Apple feedback reports specifically about this... let's hope they're listening.

I switched from my Belkin USB hub to a Griffin USB Audio hub and my problems disappeared. I'm pretty certain the Belkin hub is to blame.

Really...? That solved it for you...?

I have 4 (four) Belkin hubs,,, are you suggesting that the problem is with Belkin, and NOT Apple...? Or that it's still an Apple problem that manifests itself via the Belkin hardware...?

That makes all the difference in the world. You KNOW that if & when you get either company on the phone, they will point to the other one and cry "Foul".

So now... I need to decide whether to wait-it-out for the next OS release and see if Apple addressed the issue or just leapfrog the problem and spend some $$$ for new hubs.

Decisions... decisions...

Thanks for your input.

Random point: I have had two Microsoft USB mice die slowly in a similar fashion, the input starting to stutter and skip until it would just cut out entirely; in both cases, it was the actual USB cable at fault, and the problem was reproducible (though for some reason not as often) on other computers. So maybe not all your USB problems are due to 10.2.6; I haven't had any

"HOLY Coincidences... BatMan...!"

I think I just fixed my USB problem... will take another day or so to be sure...

I was using my Mac optical mouse and when I turned... I accidentally knocked it off my desk so that it hung by it's cord.

I then noticed the light was out... so I unplugged and replugged it in to the keyboard. Nuthin. Then I placed it down... it lit-up... picked it up and it flickered... I then wiggled the cord near where it enters the mouse and it flickered on & off... the dang connection was bad.

I'm sure it wasn't just from that one fall, but ever since I unplugged that mouse and started using my 4D mouse on the Wacom tablet... I've noticed NO dropouts... NO hub resets... no USB issues for the past 1/2 hour.

I am crossing my fingers that it was just the mouse and that all will be well. Will keep informed.

Well... so-far, so-good. I have not had ANY of the previous issues. I guess it was just coincidental that the problems manifested close to an OS update.

It's been about a full-day and the previous symptoms have not (yet) returned.

Best of luck to other users with problematic USB issues. Later.
