I just put a new 120GB HD into my Beige G3 (since my Maxtor 60GB was about to die) sent in the 60GB got a 80GB fluid bearing drive (got the 60GB July 2001 before fluid bearings).

Anyways, I have a Mac OS 9 1GB partiton (80GB), and a 1 GB Swap partition (120GB) and want to hide the Swap partiion from the finder since I don't need to see it (only the OS needs to see it), and I would also like to keep the Mac OS 9 partition un-mounted and mount it only when I need to boot to Mac OS 9 in native mode. I don't want to have to un-mount it each time I boot.

Would keeping the Swap Un-mounted cuase the OS to not see it (I asume so).

While I think of it, How do I check the RPM for the drives without opening up the case or going to Maxtor's site?

Thanks

To hide the swap partition (assuming it's called 'Swap') :

/Developer/Tools/SetFile –a V /Volumes/Swap

(SetFile is installed with developer tools)

It seems to be possible to prevent automounting with the 'noauto' option in fstab according to the OpenDarwin FAQ.

Otherwise, I would install OS 9 on a disk image so that it's not automatically mounted.

Or name the drive to have a period before it to make it invisible to the Finder:
diskutil rename /Volumes/Swap .swap
