Here's what happened:
I turned on the FTP service on my machine this morning. I just connected to it from work using Fetch (OS9), and tried to download a file. It started downloading fine, than after a few minutes brings up an alert that says: "Server dropped the connection. Server might be too busy". Now, I can't connect anymore, I just get the same error.
I SSH'd into the machine (using MAC SSH, I'm on OS 9 at work), and there is no one else logged in.
FYI, the home machine is connected using firewall/router, and the ftp port is forwarded correctly.
Anyone know what is going on?

Nope, but you could SSH into your machine and restart it.
Might be the service was hosed for some reason.
SSH in, then become a superuser and tell the machine to restart.
Then wait 3 minutes and try logging in again via FTP.
Instructions follow:
ssh -l[username] yourcomputersaddress.com
su [enter]
yourrootpassword [enter]
/sbin/shutdown -r now [enter]
Good luck!

Just FYI
Those instructions will only work if the root account is enabled, which there's no reason for it to be.
If the root account is not enabled, just do:
sudo /sbin/shutdown -r now
<enter your admin password>

Tried it and it doesn't work. The machine just seems to be dropping the connection for some reason. I'm thinking I might not have something on the firewall/router set right afterall. Can anyone explain how to set that up? I have port 22 forwarded to the machine, do I need another? What about other settings, "Block WAN requests" for example?

What FTP client are you using? Which FTP server are you running (ProFTPd)?
And lastly, some service providers put caps on how much a connection can send out. What's your ISP?
Hopefully, its just your client software. I'd try that first and see if you can get it to work. Also try another location to download from. Can you download it from another place (just to eliminate the problem of location). How about trying to download from the local machine from WITHIN your network. That should tell you if its your router or not.
Good luck.

You may want to factor out your router/firewall as the problem. You could hook your mac directly to your Internet connection and simpy remove your router from the equation. If FTP starts to work, than the problem is related to the router. If it still doesn't work, than at least you know the router isn't the source of the problem.
