I got my win 2000 server set up a few days ago so I figured I try to get my MDD to authenticate with the 2k server using active directory/ldap. First off it didn't work. Now it takes my OS X machine a long time just to get to the login screen. When it does get there, I enter my user name and password then when I hit enter it will go to the spinning beach ball of death for few minutes until the login fails. I tried repairing disk permissions and resetting my password. What can I do? I don't have any third party disk utilities. Is there any way to reinstall OS x while preserving the previous settings/apps? I don't want to reinstall everything over again, and there's some important data on my root drive which I'd like to retrieve.... Any assistance is greatly appreciated

Re-installing MacOS X will not overwrite user accounts, data, preferences, etc., nor installed Apps. At least that was true with 10.0-10.1; i assume it's the same for 10.2.

Thanks. Ended up just wiping the drive clean, ouch. Lost some stuff but oh well. That will teach me to be doing testing on my primary system. I should have used my ibook for this. Anyway, I was about to give up on it but I did end up figuring it out...and I did use my ibook so I didn't have to go thru another reinstallation if it failed again.

This site gave excellent instructions in how to make this work

http://www.afp548.com/Articles/Jagua...tegration.html

I don't know what apple is doing but they need to get their documentation together. I spent hours looking for info related to this and for the most part all I could do is piece together some stuff here and there. They have a doc titled "Integrating Mac OS X with Active Directory" http://www.apple.com/server/pdfs/Mac...eDirectory.pdf but it applies to 10.1 and assumes you will use a OS X server. This doc helped a little but is a poor substitute for an up-to-date version.

The point is that Apple knows that people run windows and windows-based servers therefore they have to do whatever they can to make their system integrate. In this case, most of the software is implemented, but documentation on how to use the software is nonexistent.

Here's another good site with some good info http://www.absynthespad.com/macintosh/ldaptoad.html

Hopefully people on the boards here will find my post so they don't have to go through the hours of useless searching that I went through.

This has always been one of Apple's weaknesses. Their documentation has been abysmal for as long as I can remember.
