I have a USB pocket drive (Lexar JumpDrive), but am unable to rename it. It shows up on Macs as "LEXAR_MEDIA", which is both ugly and not very descriptive. The disk is not locked; I can add and remove files, and even change its icon, but I cannot rename it. Does anyone know where this name comes from? Is it possible to change it?

never tried OS 9 but if you delete/reformat it you can give it a name then and it will stick.

How do you format these buggers, anyway? Not CMM item, nothing under file menu... where is it?

I thought that might solve the problem of slow copying if I formatted it mac. Under WinXP a 32mb file copied in 12 secs, under OS X it took 1m20s!!

Do the following:

1) Open up /applications/utielities/Disk Utility
2) Select your USB device in the left-hand panel.
3) Select the 'Erase' tab and indicate the volume formate as HFS+ (Mac OS extended)
4)Input the name you'd like
5) Click the 'Erase' button

Voilą!

Thanks. I suppose it was obvious -- Disk Utility to make disks work. But really -- I think that the whole OS X way of Go-Look is counter productive. I've been using Macs for 17 years (and computers for about 15), and I didn't think of that! What hope for newbies. Espcially those who come from a Start Menu culture?
