I was wondering whether there is a way of dragging a document onto a folder in the dock and navigate through the hierarchial menu to an application to load the specific document, or to copy it into a folder. I really miss this feature.

One can only hope that spring-loaded folders are added to the dock in 10.3. Lord knows enough people have requested it.

Yeah ... and I would also love to see Labels put back in. Its handy, you know, especially when you want to classify those documents in a folder.

I'm less concerned about labels (as there's a 3rd party app that brings those back) as having a navigable directory structure via the dock. That would make it very easy to get around my disk, I'd think...

Ummm... why not just drag your HD icon into the dock then simply ctrl-click or right-click (if you have a two button mouse) on it? I can get around pretty quickly like that.

He is talking about moving files using the dock, not locating directories.

Yea, but it needs to be a lot faster, it's painfully slow to get the first menu to pop up.

If you create a folder of aliases, then place that folder in the dock, the menu pops open much faster.

While it is faster, it is still annoyingly slow. This is one thing that the dock does very poorly.

A work around that I use:

Drag to any directory or volume on the desktop.

then navigate through the toolbar (which does do spring-loaded d&d) - most of my important directories can be got to through there.

I think the reason it's so slow is that it's building a cache of the icons in the menu. Subsequent accesses are faster (but not a lot!). There should at least be an option to turn icons off in Dock contextual menus.
