Is there any way to turn off Mail's "New Mail Sound" for junk mail only? If there isn't there should be. And while I'm on the topic can anyone recommend a good way to stop junk mail on the server level?

thanks.

yep - you just need to change your rules somewhat.

1st - turn of the "new mail" sound.

Then, add a rule that does the same as the new mail sound, but put it *after* the junk mail rule.

I"m not on my mac at the moment otherwise I'd tell you my exact rules that work for this.

PS - this should be in the Software forum.

thanks for the tip. i'm testing it out now. I'll have to wait till i get some junk mail to make sure it work, but that shouldn't be long.. I get about 25 junk mails a day.

sorry i posted in the wrong forum, it's been a while.

wierd my mail.app has never reported junkmail as new messages nor played a sound. Are you in training mode or something?

for "sailor" and any others that are concerned about the specifics:

Junk is the first rule in my rule set.
Next rule in an incoming mail sound. All it does is: If every message, play sound.

You can control which incoming messages play a sound based on whether you put the rule above or below the incoming message rule (I'm subscribed to several listserves and I don't want them to play either, so I just sort them into their respective folders before evaluating the sound rule)

Thanks, cpac. But I guess my need is more education about how to configure junk rules...did what you suggested (I have 8 separate "junk" rules), but I get a sound when anything comes in....my junk folder gets 50 to 60 messages a day...

I'll start digging for rules info...

You need to add a "Stop evaluating rules" criteria to any rule above the play sound rule. Otherwise, the play sound rule gets executed too for Junk.

as far as stopping spam on the "server level" goes...

who is your ISP? you should check with them to see if they have software or a service that stops spam from getting through to you. i use earthlink. they have "spaminator" which, when activated, stops over 90% of my junk mail from ever reaching my computer. mail catches most of what does come through. usually i wind up with a handful of junk messages eah day (as opposed to probably over a hundred per day that i'd be receiving without spaminator and mail's junk filter).

There's your problem.

I was just referring to the "Junk" rule that appears when you tell Mail to run it's built in junk filtering. This rule, I believe, automatically incorporates a "stop evaluating rules" into it, and so you'd have to make sure your additional rules include a similar "stop" to avoid having the sound play on every incoming message...
