With the OS X's open dialog box, when I try to increase the width of the box in order to view the filename without truncation, it can only widening to the certain point, until OS X decides the add an additonal hierarchy of filepath into the open dialog box (so that I cannot really display files with long fileanmes without being truncated).

Is there a way so that I can increase the width of the filename display in the open dialog box?

In Cocoa applications hold down the option key while resizing the open dialog box.
Nasrudin sat on a river bank when someone shouted to him from the opposite side: "Hey! how do I get across?" "You are across!" Nasrudin shouted back.

You can also press the option key and hover the mouse over a truncated filename to get a yellow pop-up showing the full filename (also works in the Finder, FWIW). N.B. There is a brief-ish pause before it will display.

Any reason why this only works with Cocoa applications? I thought that both Carbon and Cocoa open dialog box effectively calls the same routine inside Mac OS X??

It's very annoying to deal with truncated filenames!

This is the most useful bit of information I have learned in months. Thanks! Now if only it worked in Carbon applications, considering all of my work applications are carbon...Apple has got to come up with some better open and save dialog boxes in Panther. I've sent them many a feedback. The OS 9 Open/Save dialogs were the best I've seen in any OS thus far.

Here, here! I agree completely. We are having terrible problems finding/opening files in MS Word (and other Carbon applications) - all because Apple's open/save dialog box (for Carbon apps) truncates long file names. Boooooo hissss! This is really bad! Please fix this pronto!
