So, last night, I'm walking through the local Apple store when I catch a glimpse of the 15" TiBook morphing through backgrounds.
Seemed very relaxing.

So, as soon as I got home, I set up my 15" TiBook to do the same.
I set it on Abstract to change picture every 5 seconds at random.

My background does not so much morph as just snap to a new pic.
---not at all relaxing.

I go over to my wife's desktop. Set her settings to mirror mine. Her pics fade from one to the next.

Why will my computer not do this?

I have the latest version of OS X (just updated 2 days ago)
I have the colors set to millions.

Any ideas?
Thanks.

Does your TiBook have an ATI Rage 128 graphics chip? The crossfading backgrounds require a Quartz Extreme-capable machine.

What vintage of TiBook do you have?

The desktop-fading thing seems to have a built-in performance limiter of some sort -- if it can tell that the animation will get less than so many frames a second (and it only last about a second, maybe less), it'll just punt and switch images without fading. This correlates well with whether your Mac supports Quartz Extreme, but I've also known QE-capable Macs to forgo the animation when under heavy CPU/GPU loads.

Is cross-fading actually turned on?

I do have the ATI Rage 128.

The computer:
500 MHz
512 MB

I cannot find anywhere to turn on cross-fading in Desktop...
In Screen Effects, there is an option for cross-fading, and it works just fine here.

Any other ideas? Is there a setting I am missing?

It's a feature of Quartz Extreme. Your Rage 128 is not supported by QE, so you won't get the fading in between images...

My wife's desktop has ATI Rage 128 as well. Her desktop pics cross-fade.
Could it be anything else?

wrong, it isn't a Quartz Extreme feature, it's just using OpenGL.. this 'fade' effect of the screensaver worked on my dual usb ibook/500 which had a r128.

I remember using the cross fade screen saver on osx public beta running on a powerbook g4 pismo 400mhz with 128mb of ram, surely a TiBook 500 should be able to do it

We're talking about 2 different things here:

cross fading in the screensaver has been there since day 1 of Public Beta

cross fading of the desktop background requires you to have a Quartz Extreme capable machine (presumably to reduce the CPU load)

Click "Configure".

In 'Desktop' I do not have 'configure'.
I have configure in 'Screen Effects'. But I am not trying to configure 'Screen Effects'.

After re-reading your first article, it's not clear what you wanted the computer to do. You just said it was "morphing through backgrounds". Sorry.

presumably to reduce the CPU load
not presumably. even with quartz extreme, during the transition, you can fell the system less responsive (on my pb 800)

My GFs TiBook 400 does not cross-fade the background.
My mom's TiBook 550 does.

I don't remember the specs on the GPU, but my lowly G4/400 did not crossfade *until* I upgraded the GPU to a Radeon 8500. Now it it beautiful.
