i've got one, on a firewire volume.
don't know where it started...
i named it "misery", it contains a folder ("littlemisery"), which shows a path to..nothing.

unlocked it, tried to delete it in the terminal, tried to change its flag ("no such file or directory")

trash says its in use.
can't open it in resedit (in os9)

tried trash it (said it was gone!) and smart trash.

anyone??

Try Force Delete - it's a freeware app you can download via Verstiontracker. My brother had a folder with the same issue just two weeks ago, and Force Delete got rid of it.

are you doing this as a normal user, or using sudo?

also, is there no "boot into OS 9" option available? i know this shouldn't be necessary, but, sometimes it's the only option

Did you try -

sudo rm -rf /Volumes/MyFirewireDrive/Misery

Always works for me!

The file must have been in the firewire volume's trash when the drive was unplugged from your computer, instead of umounted/ejected. Guess why I know that.

From the Terminal cd to the trash of the firewire volume- it's a hidden file. From the /VolumeName/.Trash/, do a sudo chmod +arw yourfilename, enter your pw. You are adding read and write piviledges for everyone to that file. You should then be able to delete it.

for what it's worth:
i tried everything, shareware apps, the delete app with stuffit deluxe, everyone's ideas in terminal...

then,
i installed os9.2 on my firewire drive, booted from that...

opened the nuisance folder, found..some old quark docs & some images from my os9 days!
couldn't see them in X or classic!

trashed 'em, np.

am keeping my os9 system folder...useful sometimes!

I've had files on my desktop (in the built in HD) that the Finder claims didn't exist. They looked like notmal files (mp3), had a size in Get Info ( a few MBs) and were very much visible on the desktop. Unfortunately I could not put them in the Trash because when I tried that the Finder claimed they weren't there. I couldn't move them out of the Desktop, because the Finder claimed they weren't there.

Interestingly, not all apps agreed with the Finder. Like Transmit saw none of thosw files on the Desktop or anywhere for that matter. Other apps agreed: there were no files on the Desktop. The Terminal saw them but couldn't touch them (file x.mp3 does not exist, ect when I tried to rm them).

In the end I formated the HD and reinstalled everything. Interesingly, when I was backing up the /~ folder on another Mac through target mode (firewire) the other Mac didn't see any of the offending files in my desktop folder.

That must have been the stupidest file problem I've ever had. OS X at its best.
I could take Sean Connery in a fight... I could definitely take him.
