Seems like every time I open the sound preference pane the balance has changed and I always have to recenter it! Why does it do this and what's a good solution?

That really is sloppy programming

There is no reason why balance should adjust unless you open system prefs - it should stay locked on

I hope this gets fixed in 10.3

Well, the real point of the KB article is to show that Apple is aware of the problem. Also, when they state that more information is forthcoming, it means that a patch is in development.

this is the typical bug/feature, that apple waits a x.1 upgrade to solve ... and they they market it as a bug fix, while I really think it's easy to solve ... WebDAV anyone ?

I had this problem since somewhere around 10.2.3. It seems to have disappeared with the 10.2.5 update, for me at least.

I have the same problem on my 17" 800 GG4 iMac. It sucks, and sometimes the sound will cut out for no reason, then come back, it happens at odd times, even when I am not doing much.
Current Macs:
15" PB 1.5ghz G4, 512 mem, 80 HD, 128 vram
Dual 2.5 PM G5, 1.5 ram, 240 HD, 6800 GT

I found that deleting the sound prefs (/Library/Preferences/com.apple.soundpref.plist) is a temporary fix. Whenever the issue pops up, I delete the prefs and I get a week or two of normal balance behavior.
