My iBook 700 runs Quartz Extreme on its 16MB video card. Do you think 10.3 improvements will bump the minimum VRAM up to 32MB? I'm hoping that any improvements will still be compatible with my video system.

I don't see why that should change. Maybe some new features in the future will require more RAM but what works now will most likely also work in the future.

Yeah. I was thinking that future improvement might require more RAM too. I am just hoping that we're not there quite yet. So I'm soliciting opinions, I guess.

According to some sources, Panther is actually supposed to increase performance on older machines. Also, a number of articles have been talking about how Apple realizes the areas where XP has an advantage over X. One of the key areas mentioned was GUI responsiveness. So given those two factors, I highly doubt that Apple would do much to make existing equipment obsolete.

From what I've seen, 10.3 is faster than 10.2 in almost all systems. I can't go into details due to many factors, but it *IS* a great deal faster in the GUI dept... and in almost every other way too. Existing Mac owners will be shocked.

I was thinking the same thing a few months ago and also started a thread on it.

Every point release of Mac OS X so far has brought considerable GUI speed improvements. Since there's still optimization to be done, I doubt 10.3 will be any exception to this rule.

You may as well have said nothing at all, fool, because this kind of unsubstantiated "information" from an unverified, uncredentialed source is next to useless.
Personally, I believe that if you *really* knew (and were therefore under an NDA) you wouldn't have said anything because the mods here have access to your posting IP address, email etc. Too much risk.
Go home, teenager.

Teenager? Fool? C'mon, you can do better than that. If you're going to flame someone, really put your heart into it. Now, let's try that again. Only this time, be more creative and say it like you mean it! You won't hurt my feelings, haul it in from your gut and let it fly! Show us what you're really made of.
BTW, for those here that are curious, I don't have a copy of 10.3, and I haven't signed an NDA. However, I have seen it run on multiple systems. I simply promised not to talk about any specifics such as features, benchmarks, etc. True, no credible source would give details, I simply gave a subjective opinion based upon the build that I saw. No more, no less.

I saw a peanut stand, heard a rubber band,
I saw a needle that winked its eye.
But I think I will have seen everything
When I see an elephant fly.
I saw a front porch swing, heard a diamond ring,
I saw a polka-dot railroad tie.
But I think I will have seen everything
When I see an elephant fly.
I seen a clothes horse he r'ar up and buck
And they tell me that a man made a vegetable truck
I didn't see that I only heard
But just to be sociable
I'll take your word
I heard a fireside chat
I saw a baseball bat
And I just laughed till I thought I'd die
But I'd been done seen about everything
When I see an elephant fly.
I even heard a chocolate drop,
I went into a store, saw a bicycle shop.
You can't deny the things you see,
but I know there's certain things that just can't be.
The other day by chance, saw an old barn dance,
And I just laughed til I thought I'd die.
But I think I will have seen everything when I see an elephant fly.

Most ISPs keep records of which subscriber had which IP address when. Those records can be subpoenaed.
This is how "Worker Bee" was identified.

I hate to interrupt the flamage, but since it seems rather ineffectual, I'll do so.
As an owner of a 15" TiPB 800 MHz, I'd be *really* pissed if Panther had requirements which prevented me from running it in all its glory.
Not that Apple seems to give a flying f-ck whether I'm pissed, but so it goes.

No, it isn't out yet.

Did people who had 10.1.5 installed find out that 10.2 wouldn't work? No, not at all. Apple won't miss out on the oppertunity to sell all those upgrades.

I will be SHOCKED if 10.3 rehabilitates any old hardware at all. Apple is all about incenting hardware purchases. I predict my TiBook 550 will still be too slow.

I predict that's a stupid statement. I predict it will work as well on my 500 MHz G3 as does 10.2.6, which is just fine.

Actually, you can turn it on (in certain situations) regardless. There is an article on MACOSXHINTS that discusses it.

Good point. I forgot that. In any case, I don't think Apple will make it "not work" with 16MB. I was just wondering whether 32MB will show more improvement than the 16MB cards.
