I never tried to so I am wondering if you can make copies of system discs and how to do it.
I also need to upgrade a G3 powerbook running OS 8.6 to 10.2
In reading other posts it looks like I might have to install 9.2 first. Is this true??

Thanks....

Making a backup of the OS X CDs is the same as copying any other CD. if you have Toast, click the Copy tab and it's simple from there. If you don't have Toast, open up Disk Copy (/Applications/Utilities), click File->New Image From Device. Chose the drive that you want to copy and make the disc imagine. Chose DVD/CD master before you click save though. There's no sense using the compressed option (default) since you likely won't want to keep the disc images on your hard disk. Once it's done, click File->Burn Imagine, pick the disc image and burn it.

I've installed 10.2 without having 9.x on the system. I'm not sure why you'd need OS 9 already installed, since OS X is completely independent of 9, except for using some of it for the Classic environment.

No reason to install 9.

Making backups of your system CDs is a really great idea. I mis-placed my Jaguar CDs after a trip to London, and it really screwed me up: how could I handle a big problem on my computers without them?

Note to self: never put important CDs (or DVDs) in the same with Tyvek sleeves and in the same place as your blank CDs. Doh!

Hi,

When I put a new hard drive into my G3 Powerbook, OS X (10.2) wouldn't allow me to install on the hard until I installed OS 9.2 on it.

I had this problem with another G3 powerbook as well so you may run into it as well.

Yep... I installed a new 30 gig IBM Travelstar into my Pismo and the system could not see the drive to format it and install.

I had to boot off an OS9 disc and use Disk Setup to format the drive... Looks like OS9 is still handy.

I wonder if this happens with the new TiBooks that aren't able to boot to OS9
