I bought a Pioneer 105 DVD-R burner about a week ago (replacing a Sony 32X10X40 CDRW drive) and now my system seems a little (read 5% maybe) than before. I noticed it immediately after I installed the DVD drive. Coincidence? Nothing new for the computer other than replacing the drive. Maybe it's because I'm back to a "stock" drive now? Anyone know?

Are you sure it wasn't 3%? Maybe 4%?

Seriously, though. You rebooted. That's probably it.

I only said 5% because it is a noticeable improvement but small.

I know it's not because I rebooted because I do that all of the time. iMovie3 is almost usable now, but I still boot into Jag I installed on another partition to use iMovie2. Once the movie is done, I boot back to the partition where iMovie3 is, launch it, create chapters, and then over to iDVD for final touches. iMovie3 is still no where close to being usable to create a whole project though -- it's still way too slow and way too many SBOD's....

Maybe your IDE chain was screwed up and installing the DVD drive fixed it.

If the IDE chain isn't setup properly you can definitely take a performance hit.

Something you should be even happier about is that you are a superhuman.

People have a very hard time seeing any speed changes that are under 20%.

So please tell me that you are not serious about a 5% speed bump. Are you sure it wasn't more like 8.245%?

I didn't change any settings or jumpers. Just removed the old Sony drive and put the Pioneer in it's place.

I don't know about superhuman, but I am one of the 5 percenters...

As I said previously, the 5% was only used to illustrate that it was a small gain, but noticeable. Who knows, maybe it is 8.245%?

Congratulations on the speed increase.

Since you frequently re-boot, and you didn't say that you installed something which then did a pre-binding or de-fragging, it's hard to tell why your system seems faster.

But let's assume it really is faster, and that you're a lucky one.

Enjoy.

I have iTunes running almost all the time, now I know the source of my performance loss <NOT>. I thought it was this lowly 450 Cube causing the slowness.
