I am trying to get my mp3 collection off my PowerBook (10.2) and have in the past had no trouble using various methods to get files to the Windows desktop (Samba, SFTP...) However this time I am trying to get all my mp3 files off and I think what is happening is that the Mac filesystem supports characters in the filename that NTFS doesn't.

I've tried TAR'ing the directory, but run into a rather non specific error when extracting. A .SITX compressed file has the same results.

Has anyone encountered this, and is there an elegant work around (I'm guessing something on the Mac side to rename the files?)

I would just move smaller parts of your collection over one at a time. That way you can isolate the specific file(s) that are causing you problems.

I've considered that, but with 5000+ files it seems a daunting task.

One would think that there must be some utility that will strip invalid characters from filenames for transfer to various other filesystems.
