I just bought a CD/DVD combo drive, a Plextor PX-320A. Everything works fine, except when I go to play a DVD, DVD Player bounces in the dock, but then goes away. The program never actaully opens, I can't play DVDs on my machine.

If it matters, I have a G4/400, running 10.2.6.

I had this problem. Grabbing a fresh copy off of another machine solved the problem.
