When I use spring loaded folders in COLUMN view on my new 17", it ALWAYS opens a new window. On my Tibook, the column shifted and spring loaded the folders in the same window, next column. It was great because you could just "slide" over to the location you needed without opening 7 windows. I'd really like to be able to do this again.

I have the box to "Always open in a new window" in Finder preferences UNchecked. I have also checked and unchecked the box a couple of times and relaunched the finder. I have tried to check the "always open new windows in column view".

Can anyone else duplicate this unusual behavior? I can't find a configuration for this option.

It basically boils down to this ....

If the item you are dragging is already in the window, then a new Finder window will be opened.

If the item you are dragging is outside of the window (e.g. on the desktop), then the Finder window will simply "slide" the columns as appropriate.

There's a certain logic to it being this way, but I wish there was a preference to always slide the columns and not open a new window.

You are correct! Thanks, I couldn't pinpoint the pattern. It seems a little inconsistent to me, but I guess there's some confusion for navigating "backwards" in column view. Looks like an incomplete implementation.

I believe it behaves that way simply to guarantee a safe return, in case you decide not to move the item after all - the folder of origin remains in view during the drag.
