I have seen that Cocoa apps have a system-wide spell check for text fields.

Where is this language set? Is it just the language I have set for the OS X GUI? Can I have US as system language but check spelling in French or German?

Is there a tool (freeware!) that allows changing of the language on the fly? Like a menu bar icon? Or a key-combo for pre-defined language settings?

Or could it be done easily with AppleScript? Or a Unix shell script?

Yes it is possible. I think you can set the spelling check language through the Edit menu (sorry, I am right now in a PC, so I can't check for sure). You can also have a floating window with the languages and changing them on the fly.

The spell checking language is dependent of each app. In a Cocoa app go to Edit then Spelling and then Spelling again. Or just right click and do the same. In the new window you can now change the dictionary for this app.

OK, thanks for your advice.

But still, it seems rather tedious to go through menus on a per-document basis. Isa there no Applescript or little app that would allow me for instance to press F12 for French, F11 for German, etc. ? That would really be nice.

Chose multi-lingual and you never have to switch dictionaries again.
