Not sure what forum group this belongs to but does anyone know what and how to open PAR files found in newsgroups? Currently using Thoth on OS X.

Versiontracker is your friend:
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/13165

You're not reallu opening them, a PAR file will replace any missing RAR file from an archive as long as the sum of missing files is less than or equal to the sum of PAR files.

You probably knew that, but maybe the person reading this after won't.

Rambling....anyway, enjoy.

Hmmm, if rolleyes == sarcasm (Hint - I suck at sarcasm in type) then F-U too.

If not, a RAR file is part of a bigger compressed file. Let's say you want a file called "file.avi". On usenet, that file might be smashed to little bits called RAR files.

Let's say the poster broke "file.avi" into 40 RAR files....
file.rar
file.r01
file.r02
...
file.r39

In this case you would need to extract all the rar files and combine them, then extract "file.avi" from the result.

PARs are handy because, using a program like the one I linked to, they can replace ANY of the missing RAR files.

I have no idea how to explain this, it seems like magic to me because file.par or file.p01 can replace ANY of file.rar through file.r39

There, now even if you were being sarcastic, the rest of the class can follow along

The shareware version will do that (link). I think there's something built into Thoth for that too, but I'm not sure since I don't use it.
