Hi,

I just got a new 17" Powerbook yesterday, so the first thing I did was try to copy my home folder from an external harddrive to the Users folder on my laptop. However, I did this as root and all of the permissions and ownerships are screwed up.

My question is, how and who should I set the owner & group to my home folder to, and is there a way to make all files under this directory have the same ownership and group? Also, what permissions should I change everything to (the home directory and everything inside)? Is there some Unix command to apply the group, owner, and permission to all files and folders under my home directory? The get info permission thing and apply to enclosed folders doesn't seem to work.

Thanks!

Karl

Open your terminal. To get ownership of the files type:

sudo chown -r username folder

Drag the folder to the terminal after username to have it fill it in for you. Type in your password when prompted. I may have the order of the command messed up. I'm sure someone will correct me if it's incorrect.

To change the permissions you'll want to use

sudo chmod -r 770 folder

Same instructions as above for entering the folder name and password. You may want different permissions than 770. The breakdown of the numbers is:

First number : owner
Second number : Group
Third Number : world

7: RWX
6: RW
5: RX
4: R
3: WX
2: W
1: X

Comes from binary. You may also want to try the repair permissions in the disk utility before playing with this. May save you some time monkeying. BTW, the -r is a recursive switch which applies the changes to all the folders and files below the folder. Good luck
