I have heard many things regarding downloading the combo update from Apple and running them for incremental updates vs the Software Update preference pane. Two days ago we had an Apple System Engineer come for a bang it out sessions and he was firm that there is *no* difference. When I presented to him cases where running the combo updater presented with a difference of 2000 system files than the Software Update preference pane he said this is inmaterial.
So, when you all are doing your daily updates, which route to you take and why?

I personnaly do em once a month. I hate rebooting my mac and I hate some applications needing to reboot the machine.
I personnaly never had any troubles with software updates, so it's the tool I use.
If I had to manage more than one machine, I would use my machine has a test bed and use the downloaded upgrades. I would upgrade my machine wait a few days and then upgrade the rest (besides this method saves bandwith).

no problems with SW update, but be sure to repair your permissions.

I use software update and haven't ever had a problem with it. I download and install updates as soon as they appear in software update.
I wish software update would check more than once a day for updates I usually read about an update on macminute before software update spots it and usually manually launch software update.

i think the thing about 2000 files being replaced with a combo update v. a fraction of that w/ the standard updater is the simple fact that the combo update replaces every file that has changed since 10.2.0, wheras the point release update only updates a few specific files(ie, only updates files that have changed since 10.2.5-->10.2.6).
just a hunch, but that makes sense to me.

I download from Apple.com/support using curl as it can resume downloads. Software Update doesn't. Strange considering curl is built in.
Oh, I've also got a two hour cap on my isp (dialup) so that's why the resuming is important. I never had any trouble when I used SU, so if it supported resumes then I'd use it again.

SW has resumed downloads when they've been interrupted for me, though it wasn't obvious.
Repair permissions afterwards.

The whole repair permissions thing is crap. No iBook using Grandma is going to know to repair her permissions when her Software Update pops up.
We shouldn't have to do that step.
btw, I use combo updates, but only after I hear others reactions about the updates
