I have no idea how this is done. I always use Fink, but there isn't a package for mplayer there.

Could someone assist me in compiling the cli version of mplayer? I don't care much for the GUI player as it is. It is much more limited than the cli player.

A step by step guide?
I could take Sean Connery in a fight... I could definitely take him.

a) fink does include an mplayer package
b) The GUI version includes the CLI version as a statically linked binary; look inside the application package.

From fink-
Name:mplayer
latest:0.90rc4-1
Category;graphics
Desc.:MPEG 1/2, ogm and AVI player.

It is a sourcefile, fink will compile. Takre some time to read the fink FAQ.

From fink www page:
Package mplayer
In current-unstable:
Version 0.90rc4-1
In current-stable:
not present
In 0.5.2-stable:
not present
In 0.4.1-stable:
not present

--- How do I install an unstable package? It doesn't appear in Fink in the Terminal.

That info is in the FAQ.
If you download the the source, you will get a .tar.bz2 file.

cd /path/to/the/file/just/downloaded
sudo tar xfz the-name.of.the.file

enter admin password

cd new_folder_just_created
less INSTALL

Read this- it has the instructions-
Scroll bar pages down, q exits.

A frequent set of steps is:
./configure
make

(may need pw)
make install

All that said, research what you just did so you understand it. There is a learning curve, but this knowledge opens lots of new possibilities. Read the fink FAQ. Visit the fink online help. Join the fink-beginners mailing list.

If this trashes your system, your deal not mine.

Download MplayerOSX from VersionTracker and then check out, inside the application package, MplayerOSX.app/Contents/Resources/MacOS

The binary, which can be run from the command line, should be there.

The reason you didn't get mplayer
listed in fink is because you are only
looking at the stable releases (mplayer
is still not stable for OS X) if you don't
know how to turn on unstable packages
use fink commander (in the prefrences)

Then fink will download it compile it and install it. Haven't tried but should work like
anything else.

Which mplayer should we use? There are two apparently unrelated entries there - MPlayer OS X2 beta 4, and MPlayer 0.1 (When the actual release is 0.90). Anyway, the 0.1 appeared to be a front-end only as it didn't do anything, but the 2beta4 one had problems with a lot of video that mplayer 0.90 for linux played just fine.

I installed mplayer through fink, and had to choose probably 10 different dependency options (including emacs, why would a video player need emacs???) and one file wouldn't even come down correctly and I had to ignore it.
