I noticed a few minutes ago that my computer is downloading some mysterious data at 30 K/s. So I started quitting apps one at a time to find the culprit, and I noticed that Preview was hung. Well long story short, I can't kill it. Force Quit, kill -9, nothing can touch it. And as the only program still running, it seems to be downloading something as fast as it can. what could it be? Any explanations?

oh, it seems there's already a known issue in this forum about Preview taking precedence over all other known unix computing rules. Well, now there's two threads. Anyone find a solution yet?

but would that be actually downloading data at 30 K/s for hours on end? I would expect if it was failing to retrieve the image that my actual throughput would not be affected, the app would just be waiting for data

PS in the end I used escapepod to force logout. ctrl-alt-delete alone still couldn't touch it

Hit the power button on your machine. Or pull the plug.

And then cross your fingers.

Try killing the windowmanager, it'll spit you out at the login window, killing all apps in the process.

Well, I'd imagine so. Ctrl-Alt-Delete has no effect on Macs

Ctrl - alt -del works if you have escape pod
(see ambrosiasw.com).

Back to the main topic. This is very wierd
behaviour. Have u reported it to apple?

It is possible that an application can get into an "Uninterruptible" state where it is listed as being inside a critical part of the kernel. When an application is listed as uninterruptable, it can not be killed until that state has finished. If there is a bug in the kernel causing it to never get out of that state, then you can end up with unkillable applications.

The only solution is most cases is to reboot, where often a forced reboot with the power button (ugh) is the only way, because the system always sees this application as still running.

I've only ever seen this problem with TextEdit personally, but it's certainly possible for other applications to exhibit the same behaviour.

I'm glad I made a backup of the older version of Preview before I installed Jaguar. I still use the new one, most of the time.
