Ok, this might be a really stupid question, but I'm pretty clueless when it comes to OSX, since I hardly use it.
I have OSX 10.2.6 residing on a paritition, and I have an older version of nortons which resides on a 9.2.2 partition.
When running Nortons, it tells me that my OSX partition is severly fragmented, so I need to fix this, obviously.
I dont have Nortons for OSX, and I'm too cheap to buy a program like that for OSX, since I hardly use OSX.
So, my question is this: Can I safely defrag the OSX partition using Nortons running on my OS9 partition ? Or do I need an OSX specific defrag program, inorder not to mess anything up thats OSX specific ?
Is it better/easier just to copy my whole OSX partition to somewhere else, then just copy it back, thus defragging ?
What would one use to do this in OSX, disc copy or something ?
Thanx

I use Norton SpeedDisk v6 about once a month running from OS 9. I have never had a single problem using it on 5 Macs. Now Norton Disk Doctor is another story.
To copy your OS X install to another partition, use Carbon Copy Cloner from bombich.com

You can, but be careful.
Do not, under any circumstances, use any version of Norton Speed Disk older than the latest version. Trust me: old Nortons + OSX = DEATH.
TechTool Pro seems to work fine, all the way back at least to version 2. My personal recommendation, however, is Alsoft's PlusOptimizer (which used to come with their similarly-excellent DiskWarrior, but doesn't anymore for some reason).

PlusOptimizer is good. I hear that an OS X version will be released eventually.

v6 of Speed Disk works just fine and it is not the latest version by any means. This of course is assuming you don't have any directory errors. But who runs an optimizer without first checking the disk's overall health?
I admin many OS X boxes and NEVER had a problem with SD v6. So if you own that, use it.
But NEVER EVER use anything less than v6.

This info is correct! I was just about to write these exact words. But DiskWarrior is better (you have to use the OS9 version to defrag though so get them before they're gone).

I love the U.S., but we need some time apart.
