800mhz iMac running 10.2.6. All of a sudden there has been a great slowdown launching apps. Appleworks went from maybe 3 bounces to over 40. Other apps (but not all) have also slowed at launch.

Prefs? Which one?

Help appreciated.....Rich

It would help if you told us what you did to set up your network.

Did you change anything in Directory Access? Activating Netinfo can cause the changes you've described.

Connecting to a Directory Access/Password server will do it if DNS isn't configured properly. Is logging in and out slow too?

2 imacs running 10.2.6 connected by ethernet to a switch. Netinfo is checked in DA but all those checked there were what was setup by the install of the OS. Same settings on the older (333mhz) imac and it is 20 times faster now.

No, login and out are OK. Also, the problem carries over into another account on the machine.

Did start file sharing on both machines but only the new one has the problem.

Remove the ethernet connection to the machine and all is ok but then I do not have the network or my AEBS.

Thanks to all who replied. I trashed the finder prefs and all is well.

If you would have use Disk Utility your problem would have been solved. The error in permissions slows down the normal computing process. You should use Apples Disk Utility to repair permissions at least once a month. As you saw when you deleted the finders plist any issues with that plist were reset, the same affect would have occurred with the repairing of permissions (it doesn't fix every problem but its a good thing to start there). This is especially true if you are always installing new Applications.

Thanks for the reply. I repaired permissions twice and ran diskwarrior twice with no changes. Trashing the plist did what was needed.

it seems like a lot of people are having slowdown problems with 10.2.6...may not be just your setup or computers.

Yea, I know, but this happened all of a sudden and had been running .6 pretty much since it came out.

All is well and thanks to all......Rich
