are there any pointed optimizations out there i could do to squeeze every last bit of speed out of my 800?

i was just in the PB forum (which gave me the idea for this post) and read that someone did a dedicated swap partition and buffer compression to their old iBook what are these and wat would they do to my performance?

help appreciated

The best bang for the buck comes from maxing your RAM.

After that, I think you'd see the biggest speed increase by replacing your hard drive with a 5400RPM drive.

I don't partition my hard drive. I don't think it's worth it. Nor do I think it adds any speed.

As for window buffer compression, that shipped in 10.2.

Also on the software side, run the daily weekly and monthly scripts, and repair permissions periodically.

5400 nothing. I want one of those shiny new Travelstar 7K60s... 7200 RPM and 8 megs of cache in a laptop drive, and 60 GB too! Now, if only they were actually shipping... should be very soon, though.

I am waiting for that drive too. Going to put it into my old pismo to replace the noisy drive in there now. I am really surprised how well OS X runs on the pismo, after using a dual867 for many months.

exactly as said above... repair permissions weekly. I don't actually know how much it speeds things up, but sure helps keep problems down.

I've been using Macaroni to run the daily, weekly, and monthly scripts and also to repair permissions weekly. I have very few problems.

i dont know if it speeds up things in the OS.

but repairing the disks and permissions drastically reduces start up times.

it used to take 5-10 min to start up, and everytime i repair permissions and the disk, it starts up in < 1 min

If you don't want to mess with your software, I highly recommend a cheap piece of software called Macaroni. It fully automates these functions as in "Set it and forget it."

ram...ram and more ram.
sometimes i *gasp* run my powerbook in thousands of colors (vs millions)...then again i'm in osx on a pismo.

check out "cocktail" (try versiontracker), a great app, like macaroni.

open process viewer (in utilities, i think that's what it's called...i'm on my girlfriend's hp right now ), see if anything is eating up processing power that you're not currently using

have fun

Go to Application/Utilities and open the app called Disk Utility. Click the drive you want to repair, and then I think you click the repair tab (I'm not at my Mac right now) and you should see something to click called "repair permissions."
