I was about to send feed back to apple asking
them to make quartz-wm compatible with
gnome, but I thought it would be better if
other people gave their opinion then I could
show them this thread instead .

I personnaly think the quartz-wm integrates
with the rest of OS X very well. It is a shame
though that it isn't compatible with gnome.

definitely not. gnome has too many instabilities and the interdependencies are quite annoying.

Fair enough, but every other half decent
wm is gnome compatible, wmaker, fvwm2,
icebox, enlightenment, afterstep are
gnome/kde compatible so why not quartz-wm?

quartz-wm can be started in proxy mode which will retain the copy/paste between X11 and Mac OSX feature, but will not interfere with other wms. Edit your .xinitrc file and change exec quartz-wm to exec quartz-wm --only-proxy

Works great. gnome is a constantly changing envirenment and is used in so many ways that is why X11 for Mac OS was released. There are also issues between rootless and rooted modes. X11 runs in rootless mode and Darwin is rooted or full screen mode. One operates in windows, the other can take on the desktop role.

Take a look at http://www.owlnet.rice.edu/~marcosh/iraf/macx11.html.

quartz-wm handles how windows behave, resizing, minmizing, title bars, etc. It has the advantages of using the native Quartz compositing engine for very fast graphics and integrates with the Aqua wm of OS X.
